I sat at The Coffee Club at Bugis Junction waiting for the rain to stop. Nice to sketch with a cup of coffee and watch the world go by. I also taught at this campus when Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts was using it.

I was eager to try out 2 new watercolours I bought earlier. Quinacridone Gold by Winsor&Newton and Helio Blue Reddish by Schmincke. They were very lovely and very brilliant colours.

This is a view from the village coffeeshop near my rented house in Ubud. Me and my classmates would go to this coffeeshop for our breakfast after our morning yoga practice.

SketchWalk @ Tiong Bahru 27/03/2010

I decided to be a bit adventurous today with my sketches. So last night I prepared a few pages of my watercolour moleskine with very random splashes of colours. I am happy with the result when I layered on my new sketches on top of the prepared pages. I think the colours came from my crayons and they really energised me even though I was hot and sweaty.

SketchWalk @ Tiong Bahru 27/03/2010

This is my 2nd sketch walk with the Singapore Urbansketchers. I had a blast this morning even though the weather was extremely hot and humid. I moved to this area about 5 years ago and still loving it. Lots of charming pre and post war buildings built for mass housing projects. You can also see lots of influences from the art deco movement in the architectural ornamentations and details. 

It is very common see neigbhours hanging their laundries out in full view to catch the afternoon sun. Maybe that is why people say 'Do not air your dirty laundry in public'. Perhaps there is some truth it.

Professional practice test, Temasek polytechnic

Friday 19/03/2010 marks the last day for this 1st graduating class of Environment design students from Temasek polytechnic. They had to take their final test for the Professional Practice module to complete their 3 years of studies. I managed to draw one of the students during the 1 hour test.

Teh Tarik stall @ Sims Drive market

Teh Tarik = (literally pulled tea or 拉茶 in Mandarin) is a hot tea beverage which can be commonly found in restaurants, outdoor stalls and kopi tiams in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. Its name is derived from the pouring process of "pulling" the drink back and forth during preparation. It is made from black tea and condensed milk.

Quentin eurasian restaurant, Eurasian Community House

Quentins is the in-house restaurant in the community house which serves up authentic and yummy eurasian cuisine. Albeit too spicy for my liking. This sketch is an edited collection of the many antiques and pictures in the restaurant.

Eurasians are one of Singapore’s earliest residents. Their origins are linked to various ports in the region, where Europeans had settled in, including Malacca, Goa, Ceylon, Bencoolen, Macao and Penang. As the name suggests, they are descendants of a marital union between a European and an Asian. They are considered  living testimony and descendants of the Europeans who came to this part of the world between the 16th and 18th Century. These were during the colonial eras of the Portuguese, Dutch and the British. Yet they do have an Asian element to their heritage.

The upcoming sketchwalk will be around Tiong Bahru, one of the older neighbourhoods in Singapore and also a place where good food abound! My new shoes from Island shop @ Tangs

TWG tea company @ ION, Singapore

 

It was an interesting experience to have tea at TWG tea company. I did not know that they are actually a Singapore company with a rich history. They claim to have nearly 800 different types of tea from around the world. There were indeed lots of colourful tea containers in the shop.

Thye Hong fried hokkien prawn noodle @ Wisma

 

This has to be one of my favourite fried hokkien mee in Singapore. There is always a long queue at the stall but worth the wait. The noodles come served on this boat like container made out of some kind of dried leave. The sambal chilli is a wonderful companion for this flavourful dish. Must try!

The Cathay Cinema, Singapore

The Cathay formerly known as the Cathay Building opened in 1939. Cathay was the country's first air-conditioned cinema and the first skyscraper, the tallest in Southeast Asia during that time. Today its front facade is gazetted as a national monument preserving its distinct art deco influence. The rest of the building behind this original facade is completely new.

Seng Poh Road @ Tiong Bahru, Singapore

Lovely pre-war flats near the old Tiong Bahru market. This block has very interesting and unique architectural ornamentation adapted from the Art Deco movement. Each block in this little estate has slightly unique and different design variation.

These staircases are unique to this group of post-war flats. Interesting design that you will not find else where in Singapore.
